WEILIANG ZHAO

Weiliang Zhao (USA), b. Shanghai 1944, is a foremost example of the blending of Eastern mysticism and Western abstraction.  Zhao’s works are classical, dynamic, giving power that combines Oriental soul with western abstraction. A notable commission there is H40m x W5m for Shanghai  HyunDai Plaza.  Another is for Central Plaza, Hong Kong’s tallest building.

Zhao had been an  Teacher of the Art Department at Shanghai JiaoTong University when he came to Chicago in 1986 – an important artist in the surge of Chinese contemporary art since the opening of China in the mid-1980’s.  Working through the former East/West Contemporary Art Gallery in the River North Art District of Chicago,  the elegant and subtle beauty of Zhao’s works became sought after in Chicago and nationwide.

Major U.S. collectors include Frederick R. Weisman Foundation of Art.
He has had over 38 solo exhibitions in America.  He is collected in over 520 private collections in the world.   Other museum group exhibitions include Laforet Museum, SOGO Art Museum in Japan, National Museum of Modern Art in Korea, Shanghai Art Museum and Hong Kong Museum of Art in China.

Weiliang Zhao’s first inspiration came from ancient Buddhist caves at Yung Gang and Long Meng.  The abstracted work speaks a philosophical quiet meditation.  Always Weiliang’s paintings are known for exquisite color and beauty.

Weilang Zhao currently resides and works in San Francisco and Shanghai.

Lina Nie

was born in a family of fine art tradition in Si-Chuan, China. In her early childhood she grew a strong interest in arts and learned painting from several well-known Chinese artists in Shanghai. In 1971, Lina became a student of Mr. Weiliang Zhao, one of the foremost oil painters of contemporary style in China, and was married to him in 1973. From 1978 to 1986, Lina studied hand-painting on fabric with Mr. Yoshitani, a famous Japanese artist as well as a designer, and worked for Chinese- Japanese Hand-painting Corporation in that capacity.

In 1987, Lina joined her husband Mr. Zhao to study fine arts in Chicago, USA. Hence, the beginning of their life as professional artists. In 1991 they moved to Los Angeles, California and set up their studio in Santa Monica. With the freedom of the “New World” and her exposure to various schools of Western fine arts, her mind’s eye was wide open, her artistic daring greatly encouraged, and her creativity given full rein.

While rooted in the oriental culture and aesthetics, Lina’s new work also reveals contemporary sensibilities both visually and spiritually. Natural beauty is Lina’s favorite subject matter. Her work presents not only the peaceful, graceful elegance traditionally associated with the oriental female, but also the explosive passion and desires characteristic of her modern western counterpart. In this sense, the females portrayed in her work may perhaps be best defined as international beauty, which transcends cultural barriers and is therefore endowed with a universal appeal. The influence of Surrealism, on her recent work, the wildly beautiful landscape paintings, is clearly noticeable. The techniques applied are a combination of both realism and abstractionism. The expressive use of colors and impeccable detailing further enhance their attraction.

Naturally, Lina’s work is able to touch the feeling of people with different cultural backgrounds. Many are thrilled to see her paintings. As a collector put it: "It is so alive, so moving" and he called them "Soul of Flowers". Seeing her work at a gallery in La Jolla, one of the audience from a family of admirers of Louvre Museum said:" I have seen so many arts in the world. But this is something different and draws me in!"

When asked about her artistic drive, Lina’s answer may guide us to her stylistic uniqueness and aesthetic profundity:

"Nature, life and love carry such a magic touch that often compels me to glorify them. When searching for their connections I find my own art and the meaning of life."

"I start with my passion, elaborate with my imagination and finalize with my fantasy!"

" I also consider painting a way to fulfill my dream, to describe my feelings in reality. By depicting my inner world, I idealize yself in my art”

“Green Fantasy “

I believed the propitious sign was from God!
It was a rainy morning in March 1998.  We were on Highway East 580 from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Around 11:30 AM, the rain stopped.  Over the east it was still overcast while in the west, the sunlight came through the thick clouds and gradually brightened up the sky, and the landscape beside the highway was illuminated like a stage.  "It's beautiful! Let's go and take some pictures. I see my new paintings!" I shouted.  "Yes, I see heaps of money!" my husband responded.  We slowed down and got off the highway, heading toward the mountain area.  We drove along a quiet path, turning into Collier Canyon Rd, and were stunned by the unexpected sight!
A broad expanse of emerald-green country lied before our eyes.  A field of yellow flowers spread around like a lace.  Soon, the sky turned Prussian blue with Violescent shade.  The various colors of sharp contrast added extreme beauty to each other!

A magnificent range of mountains rising and falling in the distance revealed themselves one behind the other, smoothly, like sleeping beauties.  Under a brilliant spotlight, the grass stirred under the breeze and was swept up the hill, rolling as if in a dazzling green flame!
A herd of black and brown cows were grazing here and there in a stretch of meadow.  Some were lying down in twos and threes, leisure and carefree in the undulate grass.  A group of cowbirds flying around the cows like black snowflakes.  One of the cows nearest us turned his head to us gently as we broke the silence.  It gazed at us and seemed to wonder: where did these strangers come from?
Never realized that air could be so cool so refreshing, grass could be so pure so translucent, light could be so brilliant so fantastic, and the world here could be so peaceful so perfect! Enchanted, we walked into the heavenly garden.

In the countryside of California, we were used to seeing dry and yellow mountains.  But from February 1997 to early 1998, the weather changed drastically due to El Nino in the Pacific Ocean.  After some long and hard rain, the desert showed an extraordinarily fresh green view.  We were so excited to witness this rare dramatic moment.  As an artist, I was greatly inspired by the sign from God!  Thus emerged my Green Wonderland Series.

Story of ‘Water Chestnut’

My very first memory of water chestnut was from my childhood in China.
One day, our housekeeper Xu-ma (Mother Xu) came back from vacation.  As usual she brought us some preserved duck and chicken.  We were very happy to taste something different from the countryside.  But I was more interested in some strange-looking fruit in her basket.  They were grown in ponds and were from her hometown Yang Zhou (a place well-known for its beautiful women).  She called the fresh, green water chestnut "Ling".

Each water chestnut was about two to three inches long, and its rind was hard as a nut.  At first glance, they looked like 'Yuan-bao', the shoe-shaped gold ingots used as money in old China.  But looking closer, each of them had two tiny pointed horns at both ends, like a little bird with outspread wings.  And there was exquisite symmetrical carving on both sides.  A real ingenious construction!  One can break open the outer shell and eat the nut raw, which tastes like fruit; or one can cook the chestnut.  Either way they taste delicious!  But I played with my ‘toy’ for a long time and then kept some as souvenir before eating them.  When the outer shells dried out they became very hard.  As I shook the 'nut' inside, it reminded me of the Chinese myth of a beautiful 'River-Snail Girl' meeting the industrious peasant.  And I imagined that there was a beautiful girl, my own 'River-Snail girl' living inside the little shell house...!

I was so excited to find water chestnuts again at Ranch Supermarket, in LA Chinatown.  To my surprise, they were totally black!  They varied from homeliness to beautiful.  Nature uniquely shaped them even more resembling the mini 'chests' and with strong 'muscles' and extended 'arms'. It totally fascinated me!  I adored them for satisfying my childhood fantasy again!  Only this time it was different.  I did not 'taste' them with my tongue, but with my brush!
